Car News Briefs: Jag to report SAE horsepower ratings; Euro-only luxury group for Ford?
Jaguar officials say they will begin reporting SAE horsepower ratings along with DIN numbers after a published report noted that the company doesn’t make it clear that its advertised horsepower numbers are based on the European standard.
Reporting horsepower on the Deutsche Institut fur Normung scale vs. the Society of Automotive Engineers rating means Jag can list its 4.2-liter supercharged V8 S-Type R at 400 hp (DIN), rather than 387 hp (SAE), for instance. Competitors see that as an unfair marketing advantage for Jag, but the Brit-based Ford division claims no ulterior motive and instead alleges that other European companies also report in DIN.
“We haven’t done anything wrong—we’ve been doing the same thing as we have for the past 30 years,” says spokesman Simon Sproule. That changes for 2003 models, when you’ll see SAE and DIN, Sproule said.
Euro-only luxury group?
We’re told May 9 is the date for a decision on whether Ford will allow Premier Automotive Group boss Wolfgang Reitzle to jettison Lincoln Mercury from the PAG portfolio of high-end brands. So far, no one will confirm plans to remove the American divisions from PAG, but reports center on Reitzle wanting to limit his responsibility to European marques only: Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover and Aston Martin. Ford shareholders meet May 9, shortly after a company board of directors meeting during which the PAG issue will be addressed.
