Jaguar adds horsepower, powertrain parts from S-Type to '03 XK lineup

By MARK RECHTIN
Automotive News
LOS ANGELES - For a mid-cycle change, the Jaguar XK8 and XKR have been given more than the usual fascia resculpting and minor interior refinements.

Making the most of common components across the brand, the 2003 XK lineup of coupes and convertibles shares heavily with the S-Type sedans on the powertrain front. The most important additions are a six-speed ZF automatic transmission across the line and stronger engines.

The V-8 engines in the 2003 models have been stroked out to 4.2 liters, bumping the XK8's output to 294 hp from 290 and torque by 13 pounds-feet to 303.

The supercharged XKR gets 20 more hp at 390 hp and 12 more pounds-feet of torque at 399.

Standard features include dynamic stability control, emergency brake assist and rain-sensitive windshield wipers. Jaguar also will offer its optional adaptive cruise control for the first time.

The XKR comes with standard Xenon headlamps and Brembo brakes. Jaguar claims there are 900 new or updated parts with the XK series.

Despite the changes, Jaguar Cars North America is holding prices steady for 2003. The XK8 coupe is priced at $69,975, while the XK8 convertible arrives at $74,975. The XKR starts at $81,975 and $86,975 for coupe and convertible versions, respectively. All prices include destination.

The convertible version accounts for 90 percent of XK sales, while the split between XK8 and XKR is about 70/30.
