Jaguar’s redesigned 2004 XJ flagship set to arrive next spring

Jag’s flagship XJ changes outwardly, but the real work is under the sheetmetal where the 2004 model loses hundreds of pounds through the generous use of aluminum.
Jaguar’s 2004 XJ, due to debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall, is a leap forward to make the top cat lighter on its feet. Jag’s redesigned flagship is set to arrive in showrooms next spring.

Sources say the ’04 model may look traditional, but its chassis uses riveted and bonded aluminum to reduce weight by 400 to 500 pounds (29 to 36 stone, for you Anglophiles) over its predecessor. At about 3500 pounds, the future XJ is even 200 pounds lighter than an S-Type.

Likely engine options include the 4.2-liter V8 (and its 400-hp supercharged R variant), along with a 3.4-liter V8 and a 3.0-liter V6.

Styling nuances give a nod to Jags past: Look for unequal-sized headlights with larger lamps to the outside and smaller units inboard—a throwback to the first XJ6 launched in 1968; a wider, more pronounced hood bulge; turn signals integrated into the headlight assemblies and less “eyebrow” over the headlights. Oh, yes: more leg and trunk room, to boot.
