Lincoln legend lives: Ford reportedly developing factory tuned LS

AutoWeek/11-15-02

McLaren Performance’s plan to build a BMW M5-chasing Lincoln LSE is on the shelf, but the idea for a hot rod Lincoln is still going strong.
McLaren Performance president and CEO Steve Rossi, who will recede into a consulting role with the Michigan-based automotive supplier when his contract expires at year-end, says his goal to create an all-out performance version of the Lincoln LSE sedan won’t happen.

Rossi says despite rave reviews when the car debuted last spring at the New York auto show (AW, April 1), Lincoln dealers faced with uncertainty at Ford and too many LS models languishing on their lots quickly lost interest in the car. McLaren will continue to offer so-called Stage 1 modifications for 1999-2002 models—wheels, tires, blacked-out honeycomb grille and a special exhaust system—but more ambitious plans for a 350-hp supercharged version of the 2003 model won’t happen.

McLaren’s effort may not be all for naught, however: It appears Ford will likely produce its own version of the hot rod Lincoln with tuning by the Special Vehicle Team under the auspices of the newly organized Ford Performance Group.

McLaren’s orange Speedy Kiwi logo won’t show up on this performance LSE, but the company’s idea likely prompted Ford to build its own hot rod Lincoln.
