Land Rover is reportedly planning to assemble the Freelander in Russia starting next year. The SUV is going on sale in the U.S. next spring under the name LR2 (pictured).
MOSCOW — Ford Motor Co. wants to build its new Land Rover Freelander in Russia, according to the local Kommersant newspaper.
The publication said Ford would assemble up to 15,000 Freelanders a year in Russia, starting in 2007. The vehicle would be priced from around $34,000.
Ford currently assembles the European Focus in Vsevolozhsk near Saint Petersburg.
The recently redesigned Freelander will go on sale next spring in North America, rebadged as the LR2.
What this means to you: Ford is slowly building up its local production capacity in Russia. Land Rover seems like a natural addition to its portfolio there.
