New Ford 4-Trac pick-up concept points to stylish future for Ford trucks

Autoindex.org

Ford Motor Co. has issued the following press release:

Ford Motor Company will stage the world premiere of a stunning concept pick-up truck at the Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok next week (2-12 December). The concept, dubbed 4-Trac, is a dynamic package that brings together Ford’s "tough truck" DNA with ideas that explore practical functionality, lifestyle and sporty uses for Ford pick-up trucks of the future.

The concept takes a typical pick-up truck and adds a lot more sophistication, style and purpose. It’s a workhorse that delivers on the "Built Ford Tough" promise by offering true off-road capability, rugged features and durable aluminum surfaces. At the same time, owners will be proud to use it as stylish transport for their active families and leisure time.

Pick-up truck owners are passionate and highly discerning. Ford's Consumer insight research has revealed that customers need and want pick-ups that are rugged for the workplace and stylish for the family. The 4-Trac concept clearly shows Ford will continue to produce pick-up trucks that make a statement for a younger, bolder generation of consumers who want a vehicle that provides more possibilities for them to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.

An attention-grabbing four-door crew-cab, the 4-Trac stands out from the crowd with its rugged aluminum surfaces and innovative design features. Continued

The 4-Trac has a large vertical face and prominent Ford oval in the middle of the signature three-bar grille. This dominant feature forms a power bulge that runs from the hood through to the undercarriage. It is flanked by high-tech headlamps and integrated fold-out rope hooks.

Contributing to its powerful on-road stance are a boldly embossed 4-Trac brand; large, clean surfaces down the body side; pronounced wheel arches with integrated side repeater lamps; and 17-inch six-spoke "turbine" alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.

Reflecting these attributes, the 4-Trac has a strong "rescue" theme with its lustrous red paint, heavy-duty power winches front and rear, integrated rope hooks and tie-downs points. It can carry five rescue workers with access through four large doors.

At the rear, 4-Trac features a unique double-folding, power assisted rear tray with three-step access. This "tailgate within a tailgate" offers inner and outer sections operating together or independently: the outer body-color section folds down to the ground, acting as a ramp; the inner aluminum section, with unashamedly large

4-Trac branding, folds 90 degrees for ease of loading and unloading.

The rear cargo area features six portable containers – inspired by offshore rescue boats – for carrying a variety of gear, including rescue equipment. Another innovative feature adding to 4-Trac versatility is a rear hatch that enables access from the cargo area directly into the cabin.

Ford hoping to maintain Sport Trac sales level with addition of new model

AMY WILSON | Automotive News

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. hasn't targeted higher sales for the redesigned 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

Instead, the automaker hopes to maintain sales at the level of the outgoing model, said Chris Brewer, chief engineer for the Explorer and Sport Trac.

The cautious approach reflects the steep fall in SUV sales this year.

Ford doesn't break out detailed sales figures for the Sport Trac, a combination SUV-pickup. But the nameplate consistently has sold around 60,000 units annually, Ford officials say.

The 2007 Sport Trac will go on sale in late February. There was no 2006 model. Sport Trac production has been suspended since June as Ford prepared a re-engineered 2006 Explorer for launch this fall.

The 2007 Sport Trac will share a platform with the 2006 Explorer, although the wheelbase is 16.8 inches longer than the Explorer's. Much of the exterior and interior is shared with the Explorer, while the tailgate is shared with the F-150.

With the '07 model, the Sport Trac gets a V-8 engine for the first time, a 4.6-liter producing 292 hp that is paired with a six-speed automatic. The Sport Trac's standard 4.0-liter V-6 is paired with a five-speed automatic.

The Sport Trac also gets an independent rear suspension for the first time.

Its cargo box is deeper than the previous version and contains three integrated storage bins.

Ford hasn't set prices for the 2007 model, but Brewer said no big increase is in the cards. The 2005 Sport Trac started at $24,940, including shipping.

Ford already is planning a high-performance version of the truck developed by its Special Vehicle Team. The Sport Trac Adrenalin is expected to go on sale in 2007.
