UK:The all-new Jaguar XK

The all-new Jaguar XK

Autoindex.org

Jaguar has issued the following press release:

Jaguar is proud to announce a new era in its sports car lineage – the all-new XK. Like all great Jaguar sports cars, the focus of the all-new XK is firmly on the future, while acknowledging the marque’s rich history. It heralds a new era for Jaguar in terms of both design and engineering, and it is the most technically advanced Jaguar ever built.

The all-new XK continues the Jaguar tradition of beautiful, powerful, ground-breaking sports cars, but behind its stunning looks, it bristles with practical, intuitive, modern technology, clearly focussed on enhancing the driving experience. It delivers significant improvements in performance, dynamics, safety, exterior and interior design and equipment, and product quality. When it is launched in early 2006, this first of the next generation of Jaguars will become the sporting flagship of the Jaguar brand.

By starting with a blank canvas, Jaguar was able to make use of the latest aerospace technologies alongside more traditional Jaguar skills to create a luxurious, powerful, highly advanced sports car. A major key to the all-new XK’s character is Jaguar’s industry-leading aluminium monocoque body structure, introduced with the latest XJ saloons.

With this unique high-tech construction method, the all-new XK’s bodyshell is 31 percent stiffer than the previous XK’s and significantly offers a 10 percent improvement in power to weight ratio. The all-new XK is up to 90 percent stiffer and 180kg lighter than key rivals, with a kerb weight of just 1595kg.

Re: UK:The all-new Jaguar XK

Jaguar to launch production version of new XK at Frankfurt; vehicle set to arrive next spring

AUTOWEEK

Jaguar is set to take the wraps off of the production version its next-generation XK at next month's Frankfurt auto show, with sales of the 2+2 coupe expected to begin in North America next spring as an '07 model.

Succeeding the previous Jaguar XK coupe/convertible range introduced in 1996, the next-gen XK is powered by the latest generation of Jag's naturally aspirated 4.2-liter AJ-V8 engine, developing 300 hp, with a supercharged version developing upwards of 400 hp on the way. Power is routed to Jaguar's new sequential shift 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles. The car moves from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and hustles through the quarter mile in 14.4 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to155 mph, according to Jaguar.

Thanks to the new vehicle's all-aluminum construction, Jaguar claims an 31% increase in bodyshell stiffness over the previous generation steel-bodied XK. It is also lighter than its predecessor at 3671 lbs.

Key features and options include keyless entry, push button start, active lighting, an Alpine Dolby Pro-logic II 525 watt surround sound system and Sirius satellite radio. Bluetooth wireless is standard.

A convertible model will also become available, details of which will be announced later this year. Official pricing will be announced at the beginning of next year.

Jaguar design director Ian Callum describes the XK as having 'clean lines, a purposeful stance and exquisite proportions'.

"The fundamental values of Jaguar design do not change," explains Callum. "We took influences from our heritage and evolved them to produce a car that is beautiful, visually fast yet undeniably modern – just as Sir William Lyon's (Jaguar founder) own designs were in their day."

Production of the vehicle will take place at Jaguar's Castle Bromwich plant in the West Midlands region of the U.K.

A choice of two 4.2-liter V8s will be offered in the XK. The naturally aspirated engine will make close to 300 hp while the supercharged one will hit close to 400 hp. Over time an entry-level 3.5-liter 260-hp V8 is a possibility, as is a high-output 450-hp-plus XKR-R to chase Mercedes’ AMG-tuned SL models. Europeans could even be offered a 200-hp diesel-powered XK6, a counter to Mercedes’ oil-burning SL model announced at the Geneva show. There is one transmission, a six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts for manual control.
