COVENTRY, England — Ford's Land Rover subsidiary is working on a major redesign of its entry-level Freelander sport-utility vehicle for model-year 2007.
A computer-enhanced illustration based on recent spy photos suggests there will be a strong family resemblance to the larger LR3.
Due in late 2006, the next-generation Freelander reportedly will ride on a stretched version of the platform that underpins the new Ford Focus in Europe. All-wheel-drive versions of the same chassis will also underpin the next Mondeo, as well as a midsize crossover vehicle from Volvo that will be called the XC50.
Insiders say the new Freelander will be offered only as a four-door hardtop. The '07 model will be equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 engine and will provide a much more comfortable ride and more spacious interior than the current vehicle.
The vehicle is expected to make its public debut in September at the Paris Motor Show.
What this means to you: The next Freelander not only will be more attractive, but should be more rugged and reliable, thanks to its Ford corporate underpinnings.
