Get a load of this! Auto Express has the clearest pictures yet of the eagerly awaited new Jaguar X-Type estate.
Reader William Cardiff saw a whole transporter full of them as he stopped for fuel at Kegworth Services on the M1 in Leicestershire. "I realised what they were, so went and bought a disposable camera before it drove off," he said.
Set to make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the practical newcomer looks certain to boost X-Type sales, which have disappointed Jaguar chiefs to date. Although the official name of the load-lugger remains a secret, our spies have revealed plans for a varied line-up.
Drivers can expect practical additions, including paint-protecting roof rails and folding rear seats. Extra storage will be available under the boot floor, and the car will have a selection of cargo nets and securing points to help stow heavy items. Both two and four-wheel-drive machines will be available when the car goes on sale next year, powered by a choice of 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines. A 2.0-litre diesel will also be offered, while a 2.7 V6 edition is under development.
Set to take on BMW's 3-Series Touring and Audi's A4 Avant, the new estate is likely to carry a £1,500 premium over the saloon. A secret R-badged flagship to rival Mercedes' C32 AMG estate is also undergoing testing. Offering at least 330bhp from its 3.0-litre V6, it could cost around £35,000.
