Another Arkansas agency signs Ford waiver
Associated Press
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Another law enforcement agency has signed a waiver of liability with Ford Motor Co. so the company will deliver some police vehicles.
The Garland County Sheriff's Office signed the waiver to get delivery of five Ford Crown Victoria cars that had been on order but not delivered because of an Arkansas attorney general's investigation.
Sheriff Larry Sanders said the waiver should clear the way for the office to receive the five cars within six weeks.
Hot Springs Police Chief Gary Ashcraft said the department is about to order six new Crown Victorias and he also will sign a waiver.
The Union County Sheriff's Office and the city of Conway have signed waivers; the Arkansas State Police has not.
Matt DeCample, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, said the waivers aren't affecting the investigation.
"We're still investigating. We're still collecting information from Ford," DeCample said.
Attorney General Mike Beebe has been investigating some advertising claims by Ford in relation to the Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The investigation led Ford to embargo delivery of the cars statewide unless law-enforcement agencies signed the waiver.
The AG's office is inquiring into complaints that some Crown Victorias sold as Police Interceptor models were essentially the civilian version. Officials have said an examination of 2000 models showed that some of the police package features were present and others weren't.
Ford says all the advertised features are present in its Police Interceptor model, including a heavy-duty frame, heavier springs, shocks and front stabilizer bar, as well as an additional rear stabilizer. The model is also advertised as equipped with an engine oil cooler and a higher idle speed, which promotes greater coolant circulation speed for extended idling periods frequent in patrol vehicles.
