If you were disappointed that you might not be able to tow more than 8 1/2 tons in a new Ford Super Duty pickup truck, relief is on the way. Ford Motor Co. plans to announce today that its biggest, most powerful pickups will be able tow 9 1/2 tons.
By mating the Power Stroke 6.0-liter diesel engine with elements of the gasoline power train, Ford boosted the top end of its towing capacity from an industry-leading 17,000 pounds to 19,200 pounds, for fifth-wheel towing.
Ford estimates that 90 percent of Super Duty owners use their truck for towing, whether for work or leisure.
Ford plans to announce the new TowBoss package, an option on the dual-rear-wheel F-350 pickup, today at the Texas State Fair, where it will also reveal a King Ranch luxury trim style for its Expedition large sport-utility vehicle, which licenses the name and logo of the Texas ranch that is bigger than Rhode Island and inspired the 1950s movie classic "Giant."
