Court reverses rollover verdict that favored Ford

DETROIT -- A U.S. court of appeals has reversed a jury verdict favoring Ford Motor Co. in a rollover accident case involving one of its Explorer SUVs, in another legal upset for the second-largest U.S. automaker.

The U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ordered a new trial last month, saying Ford should not have been allowed to present evidence on other accidents without showing a similarity to the one being argued.

The appeal was filed by the husband of a woman who died in a rollover accident involving one of America's best-selling SUVs in January 2000.

A Ford spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Ford is battling scores of lawsuits over the safety of Explorers manufactured through the 2001 model year. It has settled many of the cases out of court and prevailed, until this summer, in all but two of the cases that have gone to trial.
