Today is the final day for Ford Motor Co. union employees to volunteer to take a buyout.
Ford is offering eight buyout packages to its 75,000 U.S. factory workers as part of a plan to stop the automaker's losses in the United States.
The company is in the midst of slashing 30,000 hourly and 14,000 salaried jobs by 2008 following a loss of $7 billion in the first three quarters of the year.
Workers must deliver paperwork to their factory labor relations offices by midnight to be eligible for a buyout. If their circumstances change, they could withdraw the request. Workers who don't volunteer would not be able to apply later.
Buyout offers include flat payments of $100,000 with short-term health coverage, tuition reimbursement and early retirement packages.
