Ford finally plans to launch a full-fledged competitor to the Honda Pilot, the Toyota Highlander and other midsize crossover vehicles when it introduces its all-new Edge late next year as a 2007 model. The Edge will be positioned above the Escape and below the Explorer in Ford's SUV/CUV pecking order.
The Edge borrows heavily from the underbody and basic architecture of the Mazda6 and will share some components with the Fusion sedan. Power will come from a new twin-cam 3.5-liter V-6 tuned to deliver around 240 horsepower. It will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive will be standard, with all-wheel drive available.
