US:Ford has not rewritten its standard supplier contract
CLARIFICATION: Ford has not rewritten its standard supplier contract in the wake of vendors' objections
Automotive News
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. continues to talk to some suppliers who object to the language in its new standard supplier contract.
But Ford is holding fast to the exact language and terms of the contract which took effect Jan. 1, according to Ford and several supplier sources.
Automotive News reported incorrectly on Monday that Ford was amending parts of the contract with some suppliers.
Ford is discussing with suppliers the practical effect of the contract and how Ford will implement it. But the contract itself isn't changing, said Ford spokesman Paul Wood and several suppliers.
Nearly eight months after Ford issued its new global contract for suppliers, some major suppliers still refuse to sign.
The suppliers fear that the contract allows Ford to share their technical data with rival vendors to seek lower prices. Ford also can withhold funds to help pay warranty costs.
And suppliers are upset that the contract allows Ford to terminate purchase orders with a supplier at any time for "any or no reason." The automaker says it would rarely do that, but suppliers are worried anyway.
Three suppliers who asked not to be named told Automotive News that they are in separate discussions with the automaker.
