Ford Motor Co. plans to phase out the Excursion, replacing it in model year 2007 with a long-wheelbase version of its full-size Expedition sport utility vehicle. A long-wheelbase edition of the Lincoln Navigator could follow a year later.
Ford engineers have been photographed testing prototypes of the new model, which is known internally as Expedition Max. While the test vehicles are generally heavily disguised, the photos reveal some details of the new front end that will be shared with the redesigned 2007 Expedition.
The so-called Expedition Max will be about 16 inches longer than the regular Expedition. It will have three rows of seats. It will share most chassis and driveline components with the standard Expedition.
The Expedition Max goes into production next summer, about six months after the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Suburban is launched. The Expedition Max will go on sale next fall, about the same time as the standard '07 Expedition.
