Ford to take orders for 2nd hybrid
Detroit Free Press
Ford Motor Co. will start taking orders in July for its second gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle, the Mercury Mariner, to gauge demand before production begins. Ford, which has sold hybrid Ford Escape SUVs since late 2004, will begin pre-selling the Mariner version on July 11, when prices will be set, company spokeswoman Sara Tatchio said Tuesday. Ford aims to sell 20,000 Escape hybrids in that model's first 12 months and hasn't announced a sales target for the Mariner. The first hybrid Mariners will be built in October, Tatchio said. The gap between the first orders and production "will give us a better sense of what volume to produce," she said. Ford also plans hybrid versions of its new Fusion and Milan sedans in 2008.
