Ford tells workers they'll be losing jobs

DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Co. made the first of 4,000 job cuts it is planning as part of an effort to reduce costs and stem losses in North America.
Some contract employees were told Thursday they would be part of the reductions, spokeswoman Marcey Evans said.
She declined to say how many people would be affected.
Some of the contract employees were told there would be two waves of cuts, one Dec. 23, the other in January, she said.
The notices came on the second day of meetings among Ford's directors, who are considering the company's second restructuring plan since 2002.
Ford told employees Nov. 18 that it would eliminate the 4,000 salaried jobs by the end of the first quarter. Details are expected in January.
