DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. will eliminate its chief of staff position when Steve Hamp departs the automaker Oct. 31.
Hamp, 58, has been Ford Motor's chief of staff and a company vice president since November 2005. He left his job as president of The Henry Ford, a museum and historical village in Dearborn, Mich., to advise his brother-in-law, former CEO Bill Ford.
Automotive News reported Hamp's pending departure Sept. 25, just a few weeks after Bill Ford turned over the CEO role to former Boeing Co. executive Alan Mulally. Bill Ford now is executive chairman of Ford Motor.
Ford Motor officials previously said Hamp would leave the company by year end. The company announced today that his last day will be Oct. 31.
Bill Ford lauded Hamp's service in a statement.
"Steve left a highly acclaimed career at The Henry Ford to assist me in a crucial transition period," Bill Ford said. "His unique organizational, leadership and communications skills were an enormous help to me as I determined the next steps for our company."
