US:Ford will remake all Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles by 2010
Ford will remake all Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles by 2010
Amy Wilson Automotive News
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. intends to remake 100 percent of its Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle lineup by 2010, the automaker's top executives said today at the Detroit auto show.
That accompanies an earlier pledge to deliver 70 percent new or upgraded products by 2008.
CEO Alan Mulally said the new or upgraded models will offer improved fuel economy, more striking designs, quality gains, consumer-driven features and a better value proposition.
"We're just scratching the surface of what we're capable of delivering to our customers," Mulally said during an upbeat presentation at Cobo Arena. "Our showroom is getting stronger thanks to the clarity, the teamwork and the accountability we now have inside the company, all focused on our customers."
The former Boeing Co. executive, hired in September to turn around troubled Ford, waved to the Cobo crowd and bantered with Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, whom he introduced as "someone back in my old neighborhood in Seattle." Gates appeared via satellite from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to tout a new in-car digital communications system, Sync, which will debut in several Ford vehicles this year.
Technologies such as Sync are one way Ford Motor will revamp its lineup, said Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas. Fields also said Ford will "dramatically grow Ford's small-car offerings."
He introduced the re-engineered and restyled 2008 Ford Focus car, which will go on sale this fall. With the changeover, Focus offerings will shrink from four models to two.
Ford also is planning to sell B-segment cars, which are vehicles smaller than the Focus, in the United States. But executives didn't talk about the B-cars or give other details of how Ford will remake its lineup down the road.
Said Executive Chairman Bill Ford: "2007 will be a pivotal year. I believe we've laid the foundation for a stronger Ford beginning this year."

Ford should bring the Ka car from europe over here, it'd sell great if they market it correctly. It worked great for the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris.

I think you would rather the new fiesta that was released at the Geneva auto show.
the KA is virtually the new fiat 500? or some other one?
The Fiesta is based on the verve concepts & looks great!!!!!!!!

Here is a render & spy shot of the 2010 Taurus. to me it is a volvo & edge all rolled into one, have euro & bold moves designs.
This should have been what the car should have looked like but this is already an old design, it has to be more agressive , like the new aussie falcon?

For the Taurus to recover from it's current reputation as a boring, rental-fleet, geezer car, they should debut the 10' Ford Taurus in SHO or SVT form to recapture all the glory from its hey-day, and proove to America that it's back and means business. Start a war with the new G8 and Charger. Remind them of what it was for the first 8 years and not the last 12 before they forget. Americans love a comeback story. They need to prepare a bunch of after-market accessories, like HID headlights and LED taillights too!
Re: US:Ford will remake all Ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles by 2010
That 2010 Taurus looks like an over-styled Hyundai Azera! With other foreign markets (eg. China) going to enter the market shortly, the domestics will most definitely be on the run for better products at lower costs.
Keep in mind within a few more years CAFE regs state that manufacturers have to meet a 35mpg average for cars & SUVs. It wouldn't surprise me if they made a turbocharged 2.5L I4 (enlarged 2.3L) which will give the same if not better performance numbers as the current 3.5L V6 but get 25% better mileage in the combined cycle.
If you want to see the future of design do a search on the International Lone Star class 8 truck. It looks sleek and Ford should dip into the heritage pool a bit and get started creating some more elaborate vehicles where style, space and fuel economy are the majority of buyers priorities in a new vehicle.

Wow, that's pretty awsome for a semi-truck. Ford needs to bring back that concept they showed a few years back for the Ford Bronco! A good niche type truck that competes with Jeep and the Toyota FJ.

I think that's the problem that the domestic manufacturers have, is not getting concept vehicles to production fast enough. It's one thing to boast about what they could do, but what they will do is an entirely different story. So far I think GM has been 90% true to form with their Cadillac brand on reviving it from new concept ideas and putting them to reality. Jeep was planning a Wrangler pick-up, but that idea has been put on hold now that the brand is under new ownership....shame.

Ford Motor Co. should market their Mercury brand as a leader in the "going green" movement. They could bring all those hot Euro and Aussie Fords over here, make them more efficient with hybrid and deisel versions and rebadge them as Mercurys. At the same time "dip into the heritage pool" and conjur up some names from the past like Cylcone, Meteor, Comet/Comet Caliente, Cougar, Montclair, and Colony Park - something completely different looking than the Flex and the Lincoln (maybe use the Mazda CX9 as a template and take the Buick Enclave head on.
