Hey, Californians: If you want to be green without going hybrid, Ford suggests its 2007 PZEV Focus.
LOS ANGELES โ In California, Ford will actively promote the 2007 Focus as a low-emissions vehicle by putting special PZEV badging on the cars.
The Focus with 2.0-liter Duratec 20E engine meets California's tough Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle regulations, which require zero gasoline evaporative emissions.
Ford wants buyers to know that the Focus "meets the same emissions standards as the best hybrids" by passing the PZEV certification and notes that Ford offers the most models โ across all product lines, including Volvo and Mazda โ that meet PZEV standards in California. Ford says it has sold 90,000 PZEV Focuses in California since 2003.
The 2007 PZEV Focus will bear a "green-leaf highway" badge that looks similar to those on Ford's hybrids. The PZEV Focus has a 130-horsepower 2.0-liter Duratec engine, gets up to 37 mpg and is priced starting at $14,075.
What this means to you: Hybrids aren't the only way to play the green game. But the question is whether consumers will buy into it.
