Lincoln will get a new 3.7-liter V-6

MIAMI -- Ford Motor Co. is developing a V-6 engine that will be used exclusively by Lincoln.
The 3.7-liter V-6 will appear in the 2009 Lincoln MKS sedan and could be offered in the MKX crossover. The recently introduced 2007 Lincoln MKX is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6, the same engine used in the Ford Edge and other Ford and Mercury models.
The 3.7-liter V-6 will differentiate Lincoln from Ford and Mercury models "in terms of torque and horsepower," said Cisco Codina, Ford Motor's group vice president of North American marketing, sales and service.
Although some in the media have criticized Ford's decision to abandon the V-8 engine planned for the MKS, Codina said it is more important in the luxury segment to offer a credible V-6.
Most luxury buyers choose a V-6 engine, he said.
"It's fair to say that 83 percent of that segment is V-6," said Codina, interviewed here this month at the South Florida International Auto Show. "That tells us something, right? Only 17 percent are willing to pay a premium for a V-8. There are a lot of lessons to be learned and drawn from that.
"The consumer is just looking for a good powertrain with good fuel economy that is responsive. How the vehicle drives and behaves is more important sometimes than the number of cylinders."
Lincoln had planned to offer the MKS with a Yamaha-engineered 4.4-liter V-8, a version of the Yamaha engine used in the Volvo XC90 crossover. That plan was canceled this past summer, although Ford is said to be developing a V-8 for the MKS and other vehicles.
The Lincoln MKS will share a front-drive platform with the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego. Ford Motor executives said the
MKS will become Lincoln's flagship sedan.
