Mazda prices its Miata replacement

KONA, Hawaii -- The starting price of the 2006 MX-5 convertible is $20,995, including shipping, Mazda North American Operations said at a press event here last week.
The ragtop, previously known as the Miata, comes standard with a 2.0-liter, 170-hp engine, five-speed manual transmission, 16-inch wheels, glass rear window, power windows and CD player. A six-speed automatic is an $1,100 option. A six-speed manual version, with more standard equipment, starts at $23,495. Loaded versions can approach $30,000.
The previous-generation Miata started at $22,658. The MX-5 is due in dealerships in August.
