Mazda recalls 42,000 cars in U.S. over airbags

DETROIT -- Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 42,000 cars in the United States because their airbags may fail to deploy in a crash, U.S. federal safety regulators said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the vehicles in the recall were 2004 model-year Mazda3 cars.
Because of a crack in the airbag housing, water can seep into the sensor that activates the device and cause a short circuit, NHTSA said.
This is the first time that Mazda3 cars from the 2004 model year have been recalled.
