Mazda Registers Highest Increase of Any Brand in J.D. Power and Associates Study

The Auto Channel

IRVINE, Calif.-- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced its score in the benchmark 2004 J.D. Power and Associates' APEAL Study -- released today -- registered a 22-point increase, the highest year-over-year increase of any automaker. In addition, Mazda is the highest scoring full-line non-luxury manufacturer. The company's score also places it well above the industry average and is the highest score Mazda has ever received in the Study.

"With APEAL measuring what customers like and dislike about their vehicles, it's no wonder Mazda's new line of cars is driving this success," said Robert Davis, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Product Development, for MNAO. "The reality is that there truly are no bad cars on the market today -- the difference between the highest and lowest ranking vehicles in the Study is closer than ever before. Only those companies that produce cars that surprise and delight their owners at, and long after, the purchase, will succeed in the future."

Much of Mazda's points increase is based on the recent successful launches of the company's two newest vehicles, RX-8 and MAZDA3. These cars have seen strong sales since they were launched and helped place Mazda in 16th position in the Study, out of 38 surveyed brands. All Mazda cars and trucks have been lauded by customers and news media alike with over 140 awards globally.

The J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study(SM), now in its ninth year, is based on eight specific categories of vehicle performance and design that identify what consumers like and dislike about their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. The areas are: engine/transmission; ride, handling and braking; comfort/convenience; seats; cockpit/instrument panel; heating, ventilation and cooling; sound system; and styling/exterior.

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.
