New Diesel Ford F-Series Super Duty Set for 2007 Debut
Inside Line
DEARBORN, Mich. โ Ford said on Monday it would add a new diesel version to its 2008 F-Series Super Duty pickup lineup in early 2007.
The new 6.4-liter diesel engine is said to be the first of its kind in the U.S. market to feature a high-precision fuel-injection system.
The automaker said pricing, fuel economy and engine specifications, including power and torque ratings, will be available closer to the vehicle's on-sale date in early 2007. Brian Wybenga, Ford's photo editor, told Inside Line that images of the truck are due to be released on September 28 at the Texas State Fair.
Ford said the new diesel Super Duty will be its "cleanest, quietest" pickup diesel ever. The automaker said that almost three-quarters of all Ford Super Duty truck buyers already opt for a diesel engine. The automaker said it has sold 1.3 million diesel-powered F-Series pickups in the U.S. since 2001.
The new Ford Super Duty joins a growing list of upcoming U.S. diesel-powered trucks and SUVs intended to provide more power and take the sting out of high gas prices for consumers reeling from shock at the pump.
Ford has dominated the U.S. truck market, but last week it said it would cut fourth-quarter production to its lowest level in 25 years to boost a turnaround plan that has not yielded results quickly enough.
What this means to you: Ford is scrambling to reassure consumers that its trucks can change with the times โ and the new Power Stroke diesel is evidence of that effort. But will the 2008 model year be soon enough?
