FORD MOTOR CO.: Suit seeks royalties for color feature

Frank Weyer has sued Ford Motor Co., seeking to bar the automaker from selling a feature called MyColor in 2005 model Mustangs unless it pays him royalties.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, says Weyer holds a patent on the system that allows drivers to change the background color on a car's instrument panel.
Weyer, an engineer from Los Angeles, says he was issued the patent in 1999 and is demanding that Ford pay him $4 for each system it sells. Ford expects to sell about 150,000 2005 Mustangs but won't predict how many will have MyColor.
Spokesman Dave Reuter said Ford feels the suit is without merit because Ford purchased the technology for MyColor from Delphi Corp., the Troy, Mich.-based automotive parts and equipment supplier.
