Wild Mustangs: Tuner XMP builds Crazy Horse II; Shelby's 'other' GT500
MARK VAUGHN/AUTOWEEK
Here’s another Mustang tuner with a twist: Eric Cheney (no relation to the U.S. vice president) plans to build 1000 copies of the Boyd Coddington Crazy Horse II, based on the Crazy Horse I made on Coddington’s television show American Hot Rod.
There will be two levels of Mustang offered by Cheney’s Xtreme Mustang Performance (XMP) in Aliso Viejo, California. Level I will have 365 hp and feature everything from Baer six-piston brakes to new coilovers. Level II will have all the Level I stuff plus 650 hp, provided by a Paxton supercharger, an air-to-air intercooler and TTC six-speed transmission.
There are many other standard features, too many to list here but enough to add $23,871 to the price of your 2005 Mustang GT. That’s for a Level I. The 650-hp Level II is another $60,522. That’s a lot of coin. You might even find a used Ferrari for that much. But there are beaucoup performance add-ons, and you will have one of the baddest Mustangs in your area.
The first finished Crazy Horse II debuts at the Fabulous Fords Forever celebration April 17 at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.
“We’re going head-to-head against Saleen and Roush,” said Cheney.
See x-m-p.com. More details will be posted after the car is revealed. --
Shelby’s ‘other’ GT500
Not to be outdone by Ford and its all-new 2007 Ford Shelby Cobra GT500, the folks at Texas-based Unique Performance have another Shelby trick up their sleeve. The company, which is known for rebuilding and updating vintage Shelby GT500Es from the mid-’60s (AW, Sept. 20, 2004), is introducing a convertible version. Unique Performance auctioned the first drop-top 1968 Shelby GT500E at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach, where it drew a winning bid of $550,800, including buyer fees.
