DEARBORN, Mich., July 1 -- U.S. customers purchased or leased 287,381 cars and trucks from Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Volvo, and Land Rover dealers in June, down 8 percent compared with a year ago. Sales of passenger cars were 92,580, down 17 percent and trucks were 194,801, down 3 percent.
Year-to-date through June, the company's sales were 1.7 million, down 3 percent compared with the same period a year ago. Sales of trucks were 1.1 million, up 1 percent, and sales of passenger cars were 0.6 million, down 11 percent.
Ford F-Series, America's best-selling vehicle, posted sales of 74,935, up 1 percent. June was the tenth month in a row of higher F-Series sales coinciding with the introduction of the new F-150 model. A new Super Duty model, built at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, will debut later this summer.
The Ford Escape, America's best-selling small sport utility vehicle, set another monthly record as June sales increased 11 percent to 16,314. Production of the Escape hybrid will begin in August at Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri.
Business investment has made an important contribution to the current economic recovery and helped to increase sales of Ford's Econoline -- America's best-selling full-size van. In June, Econoline sales increased 21 percent to 16,963.
Although Volvo's June sales were down 3 percent, Volvo set a first half record as XC90 sales remained strong and the new S40 sedan gained traction in the U.S. market from younger buyers. The new V50 wagon has started to arrive at Volvo retailers.

Ford's June auto sales off significantly
By John Porretto, AP Auto Writer
DETROIT -- Sales of Ford Motor Co.’s domestic brands were off 11.5 percent in June from a year ago, as an aging car lineup hurt business.
Sales of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars were off 20.5 percent last month, while truck sales were down nearly 7 percent.
Percentages are adjusted and based on the daily sales rate; there were 25 selling days last month and 24 in June 2003.
Ford, which has dubbed 2004 the “Year of the Car,” is experiencing a lull in new car sales as it prepares for the launch of new models, including the Ford Five-Hundred sedan and redesigned Mustang, later this year.
Analysts predicted overall June results would be off from a year ago and down significantly from May’s torrid selling pace, but that a strengthening economy should bode well for business the rest of the year.
Analysts said consumer incentives appeared to climb at a slower rate in June than some previous months, which likely hurt results. Some of the decline also likely is a payback from May, they said.
Ford was the first major automaker to report sales Thursday.
Earlier this week, executives at General Motors Corp. said their results for June appeared to be softer than anticipated.
In afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Ford shares were down 57 cents to $15.08. GM was off $1.09 to $45.50.

Nine is so Fine: Mazda's June 2004 Sales Up - Nine Straight Months of Sales Increases
The Auto Channel
IRVINE, Calif., July 1 -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported sales of 26,962 vehicles in June -- a 6.1 percent increase versus the same period last year. Including June's results, Mazda has now posted nine consecutive months of sales increases year-over-year. On a year-to-date basis, sales of 140,536 represent an increase of 18.2 percent over 2003.
"As interest rates begin to rise and uncertainty over gasoline prices and world events continue, June saw the auto industry lift off the accelerator a little," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "As the year goes on, though, we can see the road straightening out again, and it'll be full-speed ahead for the second half of the year."
June sales were led in volume by continued vibrant sales of the all-new MAZDA3 compact sedan and 5-door. With days' supply numbers remaining low, Mazda dealers are reporting that demand continues to outstrip supply. June sales of MAZDA3 were 9,082 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 41,972.
Also seeing strong sales were Mazda's "family" vehicles, the MPV minivan and MAZDA6 line of Sports Sedan, Sport Wagon and 5-Door. MPV registered 2,991 sales, up 16.4 percent for the month. MAZDA6 saw sales of 7,569 for the month of June, pushing year-to-date sales to 34,444 and showing an increase of 32.3 percent over 2003.
Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and services support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

Re: USA:Ford Motor Company Reports June U.S. Sales
Ford U.S sales are down, due to an ageing product line. But, F-series sales are good. Mazda and Volvo cars sold pretty well in June.
