USA:Ford seeks rule exception
Ford seeks rule exception
DETROIT FREE PRESS
Ford Motor Co. has asked the government to make an exception to federal safety guidelines for about a million automobiles produced since 1998 because the size of the tires and rims was omitted on factory-installed information labels on the door panel. The automaker said the possibility of disaster from the omission is virtually nonexistent and that it has not received any complaints from owners of the Windstar, Freestar and Mercury Monterey.
"Ford believes that the noncompliance is inconsequential to motor vehicle safety and that no corrective action is warranted," the company said in its petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "The likelihood of an operator inadvertently installing an incorrect wheel on one of these vehicles is virtually nonexistent because the rim size and type information is marked on the wheels of the vehicle."
