Question 4R70W swap

Iv been looking up the differences between the AOD(what i have) and the 4R70W Transmission. What all would i need to transplant the wide ratio gear set-up from the 4R70W into my AOD. Id love to have greater first and second gear pulling power.


1993 Thunderbird LX, Stroked 4.2L Complete Cold Air Intake, AOD w/stage 2 shift kit(soon to be 5speed)

Why don't you install a S.C. transmission ? To answer your question the entire back half
with planetaries of the r4 is supposed to fit your aod. Not recommended because your
older computer with the new gear ratio will not know when to shift. You could have
problems.

The SC is to hard to come by around here. Little alone thunderbirds. I would love to have the 5speed tho.

i would not transplant the actual transmission gears. not worth the time and effort to do it. and very little gain compared to changing rear gear ratio.

just put lower gears in the rear end. that will give more pull in 1st and 2nd gear like you want.

I believe thats what im going to do Its a lot easier than working on a transmission too.

Anyhone know where to get a good set? Also, what gears do i have now?

Check out Summit or Jegs.

There should be a tag back there with the gear ratio. If not you can always count the teeth on the ring & pinion then divide to get it.
