'96 bird speed limiter issue?
Hi fellow gearheads! Got one here I hope you can help with.
I have a '96 4.6L bird that I recently bought used. I found the stock 3.27 rear end ratio gives it really long legs, too long. I recently geared it down to 3.73's. Before I geared it down I took it out on a nice flat wide open section of highway to see where it governed out at which turned out to be about 160 km/hr. After putting in the 3.73's this speed dropped to a little under 140 km/hr. I had also purchased a hypertech programmer so I hooked it up to discover that it would only allow me one option to raise the top speed governor to match higher speed rated tires. I'm running larger diameter aftermarket rims with low pro Falken tires which have a high speed rating. With the higher speed governor setting of the programmer I'm back to a top speed of just under 160 km/hr. Of course this is sufficient, and rarely do I drive that fast. But, once and a while on a flat, clear, wide open section of highway a guy might just want to let the 'ol bird spread her wings and fly! I know there's lots left in the engine but the damn computer is holding 'er back. Is there a different programmer available or something else I can do to have no governor at all?
~thanks, Dusty
