The other day when i opened the driver side door this piece of plastic fell out and now I can't shut the door without lifting it up as I try to shut it.

See the driver side pic attached to see the piece that broke off from the door. What is the name of that piece? Do I just need to order that plastic piece or do I need to order the whole apperatice and replace it.

See the passenger side pic attached to see how the proper/working latch looks.

That is called the door striker. You can just replace the bushing or the whole assembly. There's not much of a price difference. You can get the whole striker assembly for under 10 bucks at Autozone.

turns out that isn't the problem.

I replaced the entire door striker and still have the same problem.

The driver side door is actually hanging about 3/4 lower than it should be.

Pinstripes on the door no longer match up with the pinstripes on the rear of the car.

so the problem seems to be where the door hinges/attaches to the car.

How do i fix that problem so that the door is hinged properly so that the door can close?

More than likely the hinge bushings are wore out. Common problem especially with 2 door cars. Kind of a pain in the butt job to change them out but can be done. Be sure to change both top and bottom.
