Gas release button broke on 95 Thunderbird

On the center console there is an orange button that opens up the latch to the gas cap (I think it's called a gas release button but I am not 100% sure). When I was at the gas station I pressed the button to open the lid and the button just flew out and landed somewhere. There was also a small spring that popped out and got lost along with the orange button. This is kind of a big deal since now I don't have access to the gas cap and can't add fuel to my car. I figured I could just insert a pen or something where the button was to release that latch but that didn't work. I guess I can try prying the door/latch open with force but I want to save that as a last resort. Any ideas on what to do?

There should be an emergency release in the trunk to open it.
