Looking for a 3rd brake light harness and assembly

While attempting to replace one of the 2 bulbs in the high, 3rd light on a 1995 LX (light in the back window on the package shelf) I noticed the housing was partially melted from overheating. Add to that, the right-side bulb holder disintegrated when I tried to remove it.

Wondering if anyone knows where I can get a replacement assembly? I would like to replace the housing and wiring assembly, but at this point I would be pleased as punch to just replace the wiring harness that the bulbs plug into.

On a related note, are these a known issue or did the previous folks possibly use the wrong bulb?

Thanks!

Salvage will be probably the best source. If you can find a Cougar of the same year or the same year span (89-97) you should be able to find something.

Re: Looking for a 3rd brake light harness and assembly

So far, no-joy on finding anything around here but I may have a better solution.

I found these and intend to cut a slot in the back of the original assembly to mount one of the strips. If it doesn't work, nothing lost since the housing is junk at this point anyway...

Re: Looking for a 3rd brake light harness and assembly

Thanks for the link Bert- I'm sure it will be VERY useful.

Back to the brake light assembly, my LED modification seems to work very well.

Thankfully, the LED strips are WAY too dim for their stated purpose (aux running lights) but they work great for the brake light.

Using a Dremel and a router/cutting bit, I cut the original housing and crazy-glued the strip into the housing. I cut the original harness to remove the original sockets and wired them together using blade connectors.

Hooked everything up and it works well- not too bright and not too dim... Sounds a little like Goldilocks...

I may take the extra LED bar and mount it in either the trunk or under the hood.

Added benefit that the LEDs won't burn out until after gasoline is outlawed....
