Hey yall, new to forum and am enjoying every bit. Anyways picked up a 95 bird 4.6 and was throwing codes. Put on reader and came up with o2 sensors and maf. So replaced maf and jacked up car to find that o2 sensor was unplugged. Plugged back in and no more codes thrown. Now for the mind of its own part; cold or hot my bird will shoot the rpms up to 1500 to 2000 then drop to 400 or so and then back up again. And sometimes will stall. Now if Im at a red light and then it starts acting up I almost rear ended the guy in front of me. Yeah pretty scary. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be the iac idle air control. Just my 2 cents.

Iac can be cleaned with carb cleaner. If you unplug it then start car your cars computer will reset base line parameters. It could also be the tps. Throttle position sensor.

Oh and forgot. If you unplug iac and car goes back to base line and stsys. Its the iac.

ok i unplugged the iac and that stopped the rpms from shooting up then down. but it still stalls and idles around 400-500. and a little rough. is that the normal range for idle in park? also when cold starting sometimes it sounds like there is no oil and makes a terrible noise for about 2 or 3 seconds then smoothes out to a nice purr. any input is highly appreciated thanks

It sounds like the iac is dirty. You can clean it with carb cleaner.just make sure you dont get the electric connection on the ic with the carb cleaner. And when you replace the iac make sure to use a new gasket. Auto zone should be able to get 1 for a couple of bucks. If cleaning doesnt work you can buy a new one. About 50 to 100 bucks if memery servs correct.

My .3.8 idles around 5 to 650 in drive. Your 4.6 may be different. Try some lucus oil tfeztment next time you change your oil. It will help protect your engine on start up and help to lubercate it. I use it, great stuff.

If your engine is still stalling after iac is unplugged. Could be a vacum leak. Or a bad egr exhaust gas recurc. Valve. Thats cleanable as well.
