Hey guys! While turning the wheels from side to side the power steering pump sounds like it is low on oil.. The oil is full. But there is even a stranger issue. the oils is a light grey milky color. I did have the oil changed at the grage and it is that color once again.. Some mechanic at a wrecking yard did tell me that the steering box under the car is damaged that is why the pump makes that noise and why the oil is that color.. Does anyone know what the problem is? However the car still steers good..


Year 1991, motor is a 3.8 v6 non super charged.

Alot of times if the power steering fluid is silvery looking it's the rack breaking down.If it starts to catch and not turn smoothly,it's more than likely time for a new steering rack and pinion.

Oh yeah, is that why when i turn the wheels all the way either way and back lest say if I park in a tight area and it makes a clunking noise turning back to straighten the wheels.. Hmm, steering rack & pinion.. Those parts expensive to fix?

You don't fix them. You replace them.

to answer the question,on a scale of 1-10 i would say its about a 6 or 7.the rack is about $100.also need to get an alignment afterwards.at a shop look to pay $700 to $900 to replace.
