1990 Cougar LS Instrument Cluster

Hi all. 1 last question if I may. The instrument cluster on my Cougar shows that I am always out of gas. The top 2 bars and bottom 2 bars of the gas guage are on and the code CO reads out in the bottom display. I read that this is something that the book says "Contact the dealer for service". Well, I dont really want to spend probably hundreds of bucks so a dealer can play with my car for 5 minutes. The question, is this a common defect or problem and if so, is there a do it yourself fix. I have noted that when I get to about 3/4 or below the guage works correctly. It only has problems when I am 3/4 or more in gas.

Thanks
Steve

Re: 1990 Cougar LS Instrument Cluster

That is a code for unspecified error with the fuel sensing system. Mine did this after its first fill up. In the trunk on the driver's side behind the the carpeting is a fuel switch cutoff switch. A big bump or a crash, or even someone sitting on the car can set this switch off. With the vehicle turned off and the key not in the ignition, press the switch to reset it and see if that helps. This seems to reset the fuel sensing system.
