1997 Cougar Fuel pump/Starter problems?

The car intermittently started not starting. When turning the ignition key into the "on" position, I was sometimes hearing the fuel pump pressure the line and sometimes not. This was over about a weeks time. Also, when it would start the engine would run a little rough at the beginning, then smooth out. I would have to try and start the car several times to get the pump to pump, during a spell of these start attempts, while the engine was turning over, it would just stop cranking. Like turn over a couple of times then quit. Now the pump won't run at all, and the engine wont turn over even once. The starter bendix engages, but won't turn the crankshaft, and the positive battery cable gets hot.

I have purchased a new fuel pump, fuel pump relay, and fuel filter that I will replace. The engine not turning over seems to be another problem. Is it the starter, solenoid, or what? I tried jumping it from my truck and it does the same, so I don't think it is the battery.

Help please.

Sounds like the starter itself for that problem. Could be from all the extra starting with the pump problem, it gave up.

I love simultaneous failures....

I shouldn't complain. I've been able to keep this car running for over 315,000 miles now. Can't say enough about the 3.8L, it has been truly tested (my wife's car ).

I just need the car to hang in there another 6 months, until I get my truck paid off.

Wonder if it could be a bad ignition switch?

That's possible but he hears the "Bendix" engage.

I didn't read the post thoroughly, it won't be the switch then.
