1999 Cougar-Stuck in Park/Key stuck in ignition

Has anyone had this problem? What is the fix? Dealer wants to replace ignition switch/keys/and a resistor for $500.00! I have checked the fuses and brake interlock switch.

Check with a lock shop to see what they think. Does the key turn at all? I've had the steering wheel putting pressure on the key. Try turning the steering wheel pretty hard one way and the other if that doesn't work while trying to turn the key.

The key turns fine and the car will start. It will not come out of the ignition once turned off. The car will not come out of park unless you use the bypass feature on the gear selector.

That makes it an easier job. There's a hole in the lower column cover that allows a small punch or similar to push a pin when the key is in the run position and allows the lock cylinder to come out. I'd go to a lock shop and see what they say about it.

It seems like an electrical/switch/sensor problem. If you disconnect the battery, the key will release and come out... I am going to play with it a little... If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks for the input!
