2002 Cougar intermittant starting problem

Yep, I'm back.

After my 2002 V6 5-speed Cougar has not been used for a few days, the starter won't crank (although all lights go on as they should). It just won't crank. Fortunately, after a few tries, I've been able to get it to crank and it fires up right away.
I've replaced the solenoid in the engine bay electrical box but that didn't work. Then I thought it might be the switch at the clutch pedal - Nope.

After it's been used a short time, there's no problem starting it.

Is there another starter solenoid or switch I should be looking at?

Do you get power to the solenoid?

I second CatSkinner. Check for power at the starter solenoid. Check the integrity of your battery cables and the connection at the battery while you are at it.

You will probably need to jack the front of the vehicle up to check the solenoid. While you are there you can have a COMPETENT driver sit at the steering wheel, foot on the brake, wheels chocked, jack stands in place, parking brake set and try to start the engine. If it does not start, have them hold the key in the start position- DO NOT LET IT GO. Now, tap the starter LIGHTLY with a hammer WHILE the competent drivers holds the key in the start position.

If the vehicle starts when you tap the starter, well, there is your sign. Sometimes they get a "flat" spot on them and need a little help.

Good luck.

Re: 2002 Cougar intermittant starting problem

Thanks all.

Battery is good and all connections tight.
Is it possible tha anti-theft device is malfunctioning and possibly not detecting the key?

Is there a way to bypass the anti-theft system entirely?

Re: 2002 Cougar intermittant starting problem

Thanks Cat. I was afraid of that.
We're taking the Edge in for rear brakes and the Service Writer told me they would take a look at the Cougar and possibly be able to determine what the problem is (I'm too old and stiff to crawl around looking for stuff like that).

Too bad. The Cougar runs beautifully and is fun to drive but whatever we have must be dependable.

Re: 2002 Cougar intermittant starting problem

I had it analyzed and it turns out the PATS unit under the lock may not be functioning properly. Unfortunately, as this particular unit is out of print, getting a new one is not possible unless I stumble on an NOS unit.

Any ideas?

Re: 2002 Cougar intermittant starting problem

I've looked and there are really none I can find.
I've ordered a complete set of electrical diagrams and, hopefully, I can figure out a workaround-maybe the smartest thing I can do is ask a car thief how they do it ;-).
