Re: 289 Igniton Problems
Brad, not sure if I fully understand your problem but let me ask some questions and try to offer solutions as well. A 289 w/stock ignition is pretty solid. First, does the motor crank over? If it does, are you saying it will not fire up but cranks okay? If it does not crank, make sure the solenoid is working properly. An easy way to know for sure is to jump the small terminal of the unit to the large battery cable lug. If that cranks the engine and the key doesn't, make sure that all 4 terminals on the solenoid have wires on them. One from the battery (positive) the other two smaller ones which trigger the unit and the large one going to the starter. If they are in the right position and the engine doesn't crank, replace the solenoid. Now, if the engine cranks and it just won't start, ensure that the wire going to the coil has 12 volts (this wire must be on the positive (+) side of the coil. The negative post of the coil (-) goes to the distributor. If you take the coil wire off the distr. cap side and lean it over a bit, crank the motor using the ignition key and see if it sparks. If it does, the coil is okay. Try that first.
