Green74XR7

Hello all. My niece just obtained a 74 Cougar XR7, which is in fairly good shape, except that the rag joint in the steering shaft is bad. I obtained a repair kit for it, but I can't seem to get it out of there! It appears to me that the steering column needs to be removed and the rag joint fixed while attached to the shaft, then the whole shebang gets re-installed to the steering box. Unfortunately, I've taken out about 100 screws (it seems) and several bolts, and I don't think I'm any closer to getting that column out than when I started. I also can't find any info in any book that I already own or that the library has...Can anyone tell me how to get the darn steering column out of a 74 Cougar XR7?
