96 4.6L Fuel Leak Near Fuel Tank

Hi Everyone -

Recently bought a '96 4.6L with ~85k miles on the cheap. The car has several issues, the worst being a fuel leak that is coming from somewhere above the fuel tank. I can see fuel running down the side of the tank - it gets worse when I turn the ignition on. The leak isn't ridiculous, but it's significant - about 1 drip / 1-2 seconds.

I believe this problem is is leading to Check Engine Code P0171 and P0174 - "System running rich/lean".

A few questions:
1) Does anyone have any idea where the leak may be coming from?
2) I only have access to a standard floor jack and non-pneumatic tools. How bad would it be to drop the fuel tank?
3) The interior of this car is a bit rough. Would it be possible to pull the rear seats and go through the floor?

Thanks,

MF

P0171 and P0174 are fuel system lean codes, for bank 1 and bank 2 respectively. Check for vacuum leaks for this. Split hoses and connections. You have to drop the tank, no access holes.

My guess is the fuel cap is bad. fuel is leaking past the seal and down the drain hose. When the tank is full and you ride around, a lot will leak out. As the level goes down it will leak less.

Dropping a fuel tank isn't that bad. You will want to get that back end up a little bit so you can get it out all the way. But all it should be is two straps that you unbolt (make sure that you have the tank supported by the floor jack and maybe a piece of wood to spread out the pressure and then as soon as you undo the straps, Slowly lower it down unhook the wires (should be a snap clip) and then you can see everything.

It is helpful if you have 2 people to put tank back in. It can be done with 1 but its a pain in the ass
