confused Banging in rear

When my 2002 Cougar experiences sharp bumps in the road, there is a loud banging someplace in the rear. The links have been replaced and there's nothing other than the spare tire in back.

Any ideas out there?

Re: Banging in rear

Check rear struts , top mountings , springs , susp arm bushes for excessive wear . Also check exhaust mountings .

Re: Banging in rear

I've thought about the upper strut mountings. I'm going to have new tires and sway bar links installed in a half-hour and will be there when they look for the source. Hopefully, we'll find and fix it.

Say hello to Bonnie Scotland for me (my family lives in Rutherglen).

Re: Banging in rear

Hope it's something simple like the sway bar links. We're having a good wee spell of weather just now over here , makes it all the better . Go over to Rutherglen quite often , not far from where we stay .Have a few friends / relations over that way also . All the best .

Re: Banging in rear

Had new sway bar links installed and the noise is all but gone. While under the car we found the sway bar bushings to be worn pretty badly too. I'll have them replaced when they come in.
It appears the genius that replaced the links 3 months ago made a very poor job of it and didn't use the new bushings.

Thanks for the reply.

Cheers (have a Macallen for me).
