Cougar V6 - Idle/Stalling Issues

Guys,

I have just picked up a rather wonderful 2000 V6 24V Cougar and am having 1 very frustrating issue with it.. :-(

Firstly let me say that I had this looked at by my local non-Ford garage who can't actually fix it so any help or advice is much appreciated! :-)

The problem is as follows:

When the car is idle/neutral, the car starts to rev on an intermittent basis. When the revs lower down to zero the car shudders and stalls. Sometimes the car doesn't stall and the revs stabilize and will stop. This is happening on an intermittent/random basis and is unpredictable and proved to be impossible to replicate when my local guys looked at it. :-(

They however did the following work: (From the invoice)

'Removed, cleaned and refitted the idle actuator. Found 2 vacuum faults, repaired and tested.'

I have since been back to them as the problem still exists and they were out of ideas and recommended I book the car in with Ford.

Can anyone give a 2nd opinion or any advice? It would be much appreciated indeed. :-)

Kind regards,

Dean

Re: Cougar V6 - Idle/Stalling Issues

Hi. I am having the exact problem with my 2000 cougar.I am so frustrated as now im being told it has to do with summer and winter gas that the companies use and it apparently boils in the car.Have you had any luck figuring out the problem as i dont even drive as i get so stressed everytime i go out in it and im making monthly payments on it.What have you done or going to do as im at a standstill.Really appreciate some insight as now im finding out how much a piece of crap these cars as i had a ford truck and had nothing but problems and now im right back with the cougar thx bob.Ps all the car does is shudder and surge and rpms up and down.So much for built ford tough

Re: Cougar V6 - Idle/Stalling Issues

If the iac valve is clean and it is known good look into the throttle body and see if there is alot of carbon build up in there. Clean it out with carb cleaner. That will throw the iac off and cause it to hunt beacuse air flow through the throttle body is derate.
