Just bought a 99 Cougar for my son. Only had 1 key, so went to hardware store and had 3 more made. Then discovered, in the manual I found online, that the original keys have codes programmed into them for anti-theft.

Please help me to understand. According to the manual, I can program the code into the new keys by following the manual's directions. But that didn't work.

Is this "code" magnetic? Or do I need to buy special keys with a computer chip so the car programs the key code into the new key's chip?

Am I missing something here? Newbie..to the forum and Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. Thanks in advance.

You need to have the correct transponder key, you can then program your keys.
