No Second and Fourth Gear 99 Mercury Cougar
I think I have this problem figured out but since I have little experience with the CD4E trans, let alone automatic transmissions in general I could use a second opinion. I have codes P0732 and P0734, which obviously indicate no second and fourth gear. So I was hoping that it would just be an electrical problem and the trans had gone into fail safe mode because the pcm was not getting a signal. Therefore I thought that it could possibly the shift solenoids. I hooked up a scan tool and went for a ride to verify that the solenoids were turning on and off when they should. The solenoids have proved to be fine. Which then led me to believe that a valve was stuck. I looked up a hydraulic diagram to pinpoint which valve directly deals with the 2nd and 4th gear. Then I looked up pressure specification and hooked up a gauge. All readings were normal except in 2nd gear where the pressure was with in specification however fluctuated. And before I did any of this stuff, i took my car out for a drive and manually went into the gears, in second there was pretty much no response. Now I believe that it's either the servo, which i had already taken out and inspected and found that the piston was in good shape and the seal seemed to be ok, or the band. Now I tried to push the piston up with out the spring to see if it will engage with the band to see if it is broken. Everything appear to be normal except the bore where the servo goes into looked a little unusual as if it had worn out in an awkward way. Another option could be that somehow there is little hydraulic pressure underneath the servo to help it engage with the band. Either way it's most likely internal. And if there is a small leak somewhere it would be particularly hard to find. so What I need to someone to confirm or make a new suggestion as to something I haven't inspected yet.
