scraping sound - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

Hi there

i was wondering if someone could offer advice.

My son brought his 92 Cougar home the other day and complained of a loud screeching sound but only in forward gear.

So I lifted the car and removed the driver rear tire to check the brakes and spun the wheel. In forward it would make a scraping sound and backward it would not.

The sound seems to be coming from the front of the drive shaft?

As you can probably tell, I'm a novice mechanic at best

so I wanted to get an idea before I take it to the shop so I don't get soaked for something more than it is.

Any ideas?

The best way is to raise it, block it safely on stands and get as close to the noise as possible to verify where it's coming from. If on the driveshaft, it could be something from the road got lodged in somewhere.
