Boss 290 vs Barra 220

All of you who have driven cars with both of these engines...

What are they like to drive? Does the 290 make less torque than the 220 at low revs? I'm looking at buying a car with one of these engines in it one day and wouldn't mind knowing what their like.

Thanks a heap everyone, FordGT19

Re: Boss 290 vs Barra 220

I have driven both many times, the bottem end torque of the 220 is on par or better than the 260/290 but after 3000rpm the 4 valve moters go harder & there rev limit is higher. Around town I dont think there's much differance. I have only driven manuals in both, the auto's mabe a different story though. The 3 valve is very linerer... Hope this helps...

Re: Boss 290 vs Barra 220

I had an XT V8 manual for a year and found it to be a very capable engine. As sbutler says the toque levels are on par with the BOSS engines. After about 10000km or so it frees up and performs admirably against a VX or VY SS particularly at lower revs.

One important thing though, change the exhaust. The standard one is too restrictive.

Re: Boss 290 vs Barra 220

yeah, thanks everyone!

Good to know both are good. I'd like to get a car that has low down torque, so glad to hear both are capable even at low revs.
